Vietnam Visa for Canadian Citizens

As of 2025, Canadian citizens must have a valid visa to enter Vietnam and are eligible for the 90-day E-visa (single/multiple entry). The following documents may be required:

Can Canadian citizens get a visa-on-arrival?

Yes.
But please note that you need a pre-approved visa letter before boarding the plane to Vietnam. Upon arrival at Vietnamese airport you need to present this letter along with your passport to get the visa stamp and enter Vietnam.

Can Canadian citizens apply for a visa at the Vietnamese Embassy?

Yes, that is fine. You can choose any date you wish and arrive later than the applied entry date, but you must still exit before the expiry date of your visa.

@Ellen, a single-entry visa will cover your trip to Hanoi and Da Nang, and you can apply for an e-visa at anytime. For the evisa application, simply provide with a valid address in Vietnam, like a hotel or Airbnb.

@Jamie, yes, if you stay only on the island and don’t visit any other cities in Vietnam, you won’t need a visa for up to 30 days.

@Zed, if you’re traveling in December 2025, it’s best to apply around mid-October, as the Cambodia visa is only valid for 3 months from the date of issuance.

@Chris Truong, yes, Canadian passport holders still require a valid visa for Vietnam. If your wife is Vietnamese, holding a valid Vietnamese passport, you can consider applying for a 5-year visa exemption certificate for longer-term travel.

@Lohini Ellid, The long New Year holiday may affect application processing times. Therefore, we advise waiting until the end of today (Thursday, 15 February) to see if you receive your visa, or alternatively, applying for an emergency approval letter for a visa on arrival.

We arrive by cruise ship (Celebrity Solstice) into Hanoi (Hong Chai Sea terminal) and depart 5 days later from Ho Chi Minh Vung Tau Seaport. The visa requires name of hotels (e.g. arrival and departure) but we are on the ship the entire time. How do we complete this part of the visa form?

The departure airport is not required for an e-visa application. You just need to fill in your entry and exit ports in Vietnam, regardless of where you are flying from.

@Gary Babaluk, If your travel date is after 15 August, you can apply for a 3-month multiple entry visa that will allow you to enter and exit Vietnam for an unlimited number of times within a 90-day period.

We are trying to assist a stranded Canadian citizen back to Canada on possibly May 8th 2023 . Her visa expired on 4/26/2023, will she be able to pay the penalty fees at the airport before boarding her flight? or will she need to contact the Embassy and obtain and new visa or a travel document ? She was unable to leave the country on time because she got admitted to the hospital for a fractured hip. She has a travelling companion with her as well, in the same situation-expired visa. This lady stayed behind so she can assist her friend during this time. I will appreciate your input at your soonest opprotunity. regards.

@Richard Moffatt, At present, the maximum length of stay that can be applied for is a 1-month single entry visa. However, If you are not visiting Vietnam until June, you can wait for the e-visa policy update as there may be a 3 month multiple entry visa available soon.
