How To Get A Vietnam Visa For Land/Border Crossing

Foreign backpacking tourists in South East Asia are prone to visit neighboring countries through land borders. Thankfully, Vietnam has a dozen of international border crossings with Cambodia, Laos, and China for foreigners with a valid passport and visa to enter.

Vietnam visa requirements for land/border crossings

While visa on arrival is available at Hanoi, Saigon, and Da Nang international airports, Vietnam has not had this system for land borders.

Consequently, to apply for a Vietnam visa when traveling through border crossings, international tourists should take advantage of the E-visa that allows you to have Vietnam single entry within 30 days. However, Vietnam E-visa is granted to only 80 countries so check carefully whether you are eligible or not.

Before you start to apply for your Vietnam E-visa, here are requirements:

  • You need a valid passport for 6 months from the date of arrival to the country

  • 01 passport photo (see Vietnam visa photo requirements)
  • A digital scan of your passport’s biographical page
  • Visa fee $25 per person (online payment by credit cards except for American Express)

Afterward, access the website https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn to apply for E-visa for foreigners. Then, you print the approved E-visa and show it at the immigration at the borders to enter Vietnam.

In case your country is not on the list and your destinations do not have Vietnam Embassy/ Consulate, you can contact a travel agent in Vietnam to get a pre-arranged visa.

Frequently asked questions

Entry Vietnam Ha Tien

Question:

Hello Sir/Madame

We are a Danish/Austrian couple traveling from Cambodia, and want to enter Vietnam by bus at the Ha Tien border.

But we have a approval letter number 1659 dated 19 November 2020, witch say that we have to pick up visa in international airport.

Is it possible to pick up visa at the Ha Tien land border instead?

Best regards
Eva Mair &

Answer:

Hello Eva Mair,

We are afraid that visa on arrival is good for air travel only. If you want to travel by bus via land border crossing at Ha Tien, we advise that you contact the local embassy to apply for a visa before you travel.
